"good" programs are no longer shareware. =)
For consistency, please name the file archive "EZCARD16"
followed by the 3-character extension used by the compressor
(e.g. "EZCARD16.ZIP"). Please do not RE-archive these files
after you have run the program - distribute the SAME archive you
received. You may, however, re-archive the ORIGINAL files into a
different archive format to conform to certain BBS's or vendor
specifications. For example, ".ZIP" to ".ARJ" format.
A brief product description for BBS's: "Names, addresses, &
phone #'s made super EZ! Functional and friendly."
THANK YOU FOR EVALUATING THIS PROGRAM & SHARING IT WITH OTHERS!

INTRODUCTION
EZ-Cards is the simplest, fastest, & friendliest way there
is to track any number of people you deal with - professionally,
socially, or personally. Each file maintains up to 500 entries
with NO limit on the number of files which can be created.
The interface is attractive and functional. No need to
blindly wander through 2 or 3 menus before doing something
productive - once you've loaded a file, you're looking at eleven
"Cards" constantly! Plus, this is the ONLY screen you have to
deal with until exiting the program.
Your entries are kept in alphabetical order by last name.
On the other hand, you can "sort" these Cards by any field you
want! Putting them back in order by last name is quick and easy.
Also, "ranges" of Cards can be sorted anytime to accommodate
multi-level indexing of any file.
Print mailing labels for any number of Cards in any file.
Better yet, print directly to envelopes - single OR double
spacing is done for you! Get a printed record of any file with
"Page Print" - entries are placed uniformly on sheets of paper
and include the details you choose.
Locate any Card in the blink of an eye - EZ-Cards searches
for a user-defined string of characters in any field. When a
match is found, you can repeat the search, "Mark" that Card,
and/or print a mailing label.
Several 'command line switches' are available that give you
added control over the program's configuration when you begin a
session. For example, you can turn all sound "OFF" for use in an
office.
Press [D] to dial a Card's phone number through your modem -
just like those 'expensive' retail programs.
Transfer any Card to any other file instantly! Selecting a
file is as simple as moving a highlighted bar to your choice and
pressing [ENTER]! The same is true for loading a different or
new file anytime.
IMPORT/eXPORT let you transfer data from/to other programs
quickly.
EZ-Cards will make that 'Christmas Card List' a breeze and
looks great on laptop computers, too!
Have a question? Call our HOTLINE: 1-800-473-3137! I can
also be reached on Prodigy (Bob Smith, ID# FPFT84A). By the way,
we like the program so much that we use it for ALL customer data
entry (we are currently marketing one retail and two shareware
programs).
I hope you find this to be the most pleasant & user-friendly
software program you use!

System Requirements
EZ-Cards v 1.6 will operate on any IBM* or true compatible
with a minimum of 380k free RAM (random access memory) & DOS 2.1
or higher. A color graphics adaptor is NOT needed and EZ-Cards
will adjust itself for use on a Black & White, monochrome or
color monitor accordingly.

What is "Shareware"?
Shareware is a method of distribution that allows you to
actually TRY a software program before you BUY it! If you try a
program and plan to use it, you are required to register with the
author (pay for it).
The author benefits from folks like you making copies of the
software and passing it on to others - YOU benefit by being able
to try it before making a purchasing decision. You are trusting
that the program author has done a good job and your computer
will not "crash", while the author is trusting you to register
his/her program IF you plan to use it.
Upon registration, you will normally be sent a registered
version of the software (without shareware screens, etc.) and, in
some cases, a printed manual or other incentives.
If a program's registration fee is higher than you feel it
should be, write the author and tell him/her this is how you feel
- maybe he/she will wake up and forget trying to get "honest"
-- Page 4 --
(Shareware cont.)
users to pay for dishonest ones. (Since I'm also a fellow
shareware user, I thought you should know my opinion on the
subject.)
"EZ-Cards" is an example of shareware that has evolved over
a period of time. It was professionally developed and thoroughly
tested before release. Given the fact I've spent 100's of hours
creating and testing this software, I trust you'll find our $20
registration fee to be reasonable.
*** WE ALSO CUSTOMIZE! CALL FOR DETAILS. ***
"Lingo" Used in This Program
Lingo refers to unfamiliar or 'foreign' words and terms.
EZ-Cards, like many software programs, uses words that may seem
foreign because of the manner in which they're used. The
following are terms & descriptions used with this program.
"CARD" - Throughout these instructions & while running EZ-Cards,
a 'Card' is each entry in a file. A Card contains eleven (11)
"fields" of information which are filled in by the user.
"COMMAND" - An available function to be carried out by EZ-Cards.
By pressing the highlighted letter of a selection, you're
commanding the program to carry out a specific task.
"COMMAND LINE SWITCH" - Many programs are configured to operate
in a particular way via 'command line switches' used on the DOS
command line when starting a session with that program. EZ-Cards
has six (6) such 'switches' available each time you fire it up.
Please see 'Command Switches & Usage' for details on available
switches. 'Switch', 'Command Switch', or 'Command Line Switch'
all have the same meaning in these instructions and while running
the program.
"EZ-FILE" - A file on disk containing up to five hundred (500)
Cards.
"FIELD(S)" - Each area of the Card that can be typed in is a
'field'. There are labels for each field on a Card such as Name,
Company, Address, City, etc. The four MEMO fields can be
considered Line 1, Line 2, etc. All fields have a limited amount
of space to type details in. Although we haven't had a problem
with running out of space, you may. If so, you'll need to use
abbreviations.
-- Page 5 --
(Lingo cont.)
"LOAD" - This refers to accessing an EZ-File. When you LOAD
another EZ-File from within the program, your current file is
saved in its present order before the next one is LOADed.
"STRING" - A 'string' of characters is one or more letter(s),
number(s), etc. typed by you. This term is used mainly when
referring to the FIND command.
"TOPCARD" - Also called the 'front Card', this is the Card on top
that is displaying all its fields. Whenever you LOAD an EZ-File,
ADD a Card, or SORT all Cards, the TopCard will be number one
(1). Only the TopCard can be copied, edited, removed, or
transferred. Use your cursor keys to place different Cards on
top.
GETTING STARTED
It is strongly recommended you run this program from your
hard-drive (if available). Make a new directory, like "EZCARD",
and copy all files into it.
To start the program normally & without using any of the
available command line switches, type:
EZC [ENTER]
Next, move the highlight bar to "EZSAMPLE.EZF" and press
[ENTER]. This loads a sample EZ-File containing over 100 entries
to practice using the commands on.
Go ahead and try 'em out! Use your cursor keys to flip
through the Cards (one at a time with [Down] or [Up] arrows and
10 at a time with [PgDn] or [PgUp]); press the highlighted letter
of any command and see what you can do! You can hit [ESC] at
virtually any point to 'back up' or cancel a command.
The "Next 10" window displays the last name on the 10 cards
behind the TopCard.
Come back to these instructions when you want to learn more
about EZ-Cards. In the meantime, press [H] or [F1] from within
the program to access "Help" on any command.
-- Page 6 --
Command Switches & Usage
To provide you extra control, EZ-Cards can be configured in
a few special ways when you start it. Each switch must be
preceded with a [/] (forward slash), but case is not important -
a "C" or "c" will produce the same results. The order is also
not important with the exception of "/L" which must be used LAST.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
MONOCHROME or COLOR may be forced with the "/M" or "/C" switch.
Although EZ-Cards adjusts itself according to your installed
video card, you may force it to run in either mode. This is
particularly useful for folks who have a color graphics video
card but use a monochrome or B&W monitor.
Syntax: EZC /M
-----------------------------------------------------------------
TURNING SOUND "OFF" might come in handy when running EZ-Cards in
a professional atmosphere, such as an office. However, some
sounds, such as "wrong key" or "error", remain.
Syntax: EZC /S (Remember "S" for Silence)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
START EZ-CARDS WITH AUTOSORT "OFF" when you have a large file
sorted by more than one field (done with 'range sorts'). You may
still toggle AutoSort "ON" & "OFF" from within the program. This
might help you avoid an accidental AutoSort of a multi-sorted
file.
Syntax: EZC /O (Letter "o", not zero)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
CHANGE THE COM PORT SETTING by entering the number of your COM
port on the command line. Either "/1" or "/2" is acceptable and
this only needs to be done ONCE. EZ-Cards is distributed set up
for COM2, so if your modem is on that port you won't need to use
this switch at all (unless you move your modem to COM1).
Syntax: EZC /1 (Number ONE, not "L")
-----------------------------------------------------------------
PULSE DIAL PHONE users need to use the "/P" switch when planning
to use the DIAL command. Otherwise, touch-tone is assumed.
Syntax: EZC /P
-----------------------------------------------------------------
LOAD AN EZ-FILE IMMEDIATELY without the need to select one from
the opening screen. Do not include the ".EZF" extension and be
sure this is used LAST. You can also begin a NEW file this way.
Syntax: EZC /L {FILENAME}
...where {FILENAME} is the EZ-File you wish loaded (minus its
".EZF" extension. If you select a file that does not exist, EZ-
-- Page 7 --
(Command Switches cont.)
Cards will let you know and ask if it's "Okay to create". An "N"
reply allows you to select from the normal file menu, while a "Y"
reply will create this file and go to "ADD" mode.
Command Switch Examples
To change the COM port setting to COM1, turn sound "OFF" for
this session, and load an EZ-File named 'HOME.EZF', you would
type:
EZC /S /1 /L HOME [ENTER]
To load 'BUSINESS.EZF' and start the program with AutoSort
"OFF", type:
EZC /O /L BUSINESS [ENTER]
Tell EZ-Cards to send pulse signals to your modem instead of
touch-tones by typing:
EZC /P [ENTER]
Typing the following will turn most sound "OFF", start the
program with AutoSort "OFF", and tell EZ-Cards to change its set
up to COM1:
EZC /S /O /1 [ENTER]
To make these examples more readable, I've included spaces
between each switch. You do not have to include spaces when
using any switch (except between "L" and an EZ-Filename). For
example:
EZC/S/2/L BUSINESS [ENTER]
...is a valid entry.
-- Page 8 --
A Note on File Menus
Whether LOADing, IMPORTing, or TRANSFERring, the File Menu
displayed will contain: Filename, Size, Date of last access, and
Time of last access.
Use: [Up], [Down], [PgUp], [PgDn], [Home], [End] cursor keys
to move the highlight bar to your choice. Also, pressing the
first character of a filename will jump the highlight bar to the
next match.
When IMPORTing, "<dir>" indicates a subdirectory off the
current directory.
AutoSort
AutoSort is a fantastic function that EZ-Cards executes
automatically each time a Card is added, copied, or edited.
Cards are indexed alphabetically by LAST name - "JR.", "SR.", and
"III" are filtered out if present. Press [O] (letter "o") to
toggle AutoSort "ON" or "OFF". EZ-Cards always begins with it
"ON" unless the "/O" command line switch has been used (See
previous section).
ADDing & EDITing
EZ-Cards offers the next best thing to full-screen editing.
You can use your cursor keys, [BackSpace], [Del], and normal keys
to type the details for each field. If you're at the end of a
field (either side), your cursor will automatically 'jump' to the
next field. Toggle [Ins] to "Overstrike" (a.k.a. "Typeover") or
"Insert" just like any word processor. 'Command windows' appear
at the top of your screen for ADD, EDIT, FIND, & SORT. In the
lower left of that window, you'll see the [Ins] status ("OVRSTR"
or "INSERT").
When editing the Name, Company, Address, or City field, the
first letter of each word is automatically upper-cased for you.
BOTH letters are upper-cased in the State field. When ADDing a
Card, "(", ")", and "-" are put in their proper place for you in
the Phone field. If the number is local (no area code needed),
simply press [SPACE BAR] to put "( )" in the first five (5)
spaces for you. A "-" will also appear in the "Zip" field when
appropriate.
Each time you ADD a Card, EZ-Cards "saves" the details you
type in every field. To "call up" these saved details, press [;]
(semi-colon) to have EZ-Cards place those details into whichever
field your cursor is in.
To ADD more than one Card, press [=] or [+] when you're done
with each - this saves your current Card and offers another blank
one. When finished ADDing, press [F10].
-- Page 9 --
(ADDing/EDITing cont.)
Whenever you're editing a Card, pressing [ENTER] moves your
cursor to the next field. One exception to this is when using
FIND - if you've typed anything in the current field, pressing
[ENTER] begins the search.
COPY
Pressing [C] will make an exact duplicate of the TopCard,
including the MEMO fields. If AutoSort is "ON", your new Card
will end up right next to its original. This is particularly
useful when TRANSFERring a Card to another file - it allows you
to keep a copy in the current file.
DIAL
Press [D] to immediately DIAL the TopCard's phone number
through your modem. If an area code is present (there are 10
numbers), EZ-Cards will send a "1" (one) before the phone number.
When you hear the phone 'ringing' at the other end (coming from
your modem's speaker), pick up the handset of your telephone and
press any key to disconnect the modem.
If there are not at least seven numbers to be DIALed, EZ-
Cards will inform you of this "error".
EZ-Cards is distributed set up for COM2. If your modem is
on COM1, use the "/1" (forward slash; one) command line switch to
change it (only needs to be done once).
EZ-Cards immediately tells your modem to "hang up" when you
press any key. Thus, if you change your mind before the number
is finished DIALing, press a key to cancel.
Most modems are initialized when you turn the computer "ON".
If EZ-Cards is having a problem dialing through your modem, even
though you're set up on the correct COM port, read the modem's
instructions on "initialization" to learn how to resolve this.
To the best of our knowledge, this feature will operate on
ANY modem that supports 1200 baud or higher.
FIND
EZ-Cards will quickly locate any Card in the current file.
After selecting [F], move the cursor to whichever field you'd
like to use for this FIND. Type ANY distinguishing string of
characters and press [ENTER] or [F10] to begin the search. For
example, to locate a Card with "Mr. R. W. Smith Jr." in the Name
field, you could type: "smi" [ENTER]; "r. w" [ENTER]; or "w. sm"
[ENTER]. All three would produce the same results: A "found"
-- Page 10 --
(FIND cont.)
Card. As illustrated, case is not important - "s" or "S" are
treated equally. Furthermore, the string you type can be any
length - from one character to the entire length of the field.
Once "found", you may press [R] to Repeat the search, [M] to
Mark/Unmark the Card, and/or [P] to Print a mailing label. The
only time you can't [R]epeat is when the match happens to be the
last Card in that file & EZ-Cards will inform you of this fact if
it occurs. You may still, of course, [P]rint a mailing label for
that Card and/or [M]ark/Unmark it. NOTE: <SpaceBar> can also be
used to Mark or Unmark the Card.
If you chose ANY of the four (4) MEMO fields to use for a
search, ALL four (4) will be examined for a match. This is
especially useful when you're not sure which line of the MEMO
contains the details you're looking for.
GO TO "<m>"
Places the next "Marked" Card on top. ("<m>" is used in
these instructions in place of the diamond character so any
printer can be used.) If none are Marked, you'll hear an "error"
sound.
IMPORT
EZ-Cards will IMPORT any normal "ASCII" file on the current
disk. Fields must be delimited with quotations and commas, while
records must end with a carriage return. (This is "normal" ASCII
delimited format).
If the file selected is not in proper format, you'll be
informed and the IMPORT will be cancelled. Selected files may
include: NAME, COMPANY, ADDRESS, CITY, STATE, ZIP & PHONE fields.
It's important that any fields that are blank still contain side-
by-side quotes and a comma ("",) or the file will not be properly
IMPORTed (comma not required if it's the last field). Extra
fields beyond those mentioned will be ignored. So, if you chose
to eXPORT an EZ-File and include MEMOs, then IMPORT the same
file, MEMOs will not be IMPORTed.
Here's an example of how one (1) record of an ASCII file
might look:
"Bob Smith","","P. O. Box 13717","Detroit","MI","48213",""
Note that the COMPANY and PHONE fields have quotes even though
they are blank (and will remain blank when IMPORTed).
-- Page 11 --
LOAD
Selecting LOAD allows you to close up the current EZ-File
(saved in its present order), then choose another to access. The
file is not actually closed until you make a selection - press
[ESC] if you change your mind. You may select "* NEW FILE *" to
name and begin a new file at that time. Typing the name of an
existing file is okay, too.
For details on LOADing from the command line, please see
"Command Switches & Usage".
Marking/Unmarking Cards
If the TopCard is Marked, <SpaceBar> will Unmark it and vice
versa. Marking is very useful when you wish to selectively PRINT
Cards in the current EZ-File (you'll see...). The status of all
Cards (Marked/Unmarked) will stay that way when the file is
closed, so when you return to it later, the same Cards will be
Marked.
MEMO
To suit different preferences, you can toggle the MEMO
portion to be displayed or not be displayed by pressing [M].
Even though the "Mark" commands are covered when MEMO is shown,
they are still available.
PRINT
Powerful, yet versatile, this command lets you do Mailing
labels, Print directly to Envelopes, or "Page Prints" which place
user-selected fields uniformly on sheets of paper.
When printing a "range of Cards", the acceptable range is
from #1 up to, and including, the last Card in your file. You'll
be asked for a "FIRST" and "LAST" Card to use for a range - FIRST
is the Card to start with, while LAST means the final Card to
include.
Both "Mailing labels" and "Envelopes" print: Name, Company,
Address, City, State, and Zip. If nothing is entered in the
Company field, a blank line will NOT be present on your label or
envelope. Envelopes can be printed with S)ingle or D)ouble
spacing.
All print info is sent to parallel port "LPT1". If EZ-Cards
has a problem during a PRINT job, it will be cancelled with an
"Error" message. Press [ESC] anytime before or during a PRINT
job to cancel.
-- Page 12 --
(PRINT cont.)
"Page Print" supports both continuous feed or single-sheet
feed printers. At the top of 'Page 1', EZ-Cards will print: The
name of that EZ-File, your name (reg. version), the number of
Cards ("Records"), and today's date. Also, the number of each
entry is shown on the left of all pages & entries.
EZ-Cards supports mailing labels of the single- or double-
column variety. Labels must be 15/16" in height (standard size).
Be sure to practice with scratch paper before using expensive
mailing labels or envelopes.
REMOVE
If a Card is no longer needed, press [R]. A removed Card
CANNOT be recovered, so use caution. Of course, you'll be asked
for confirmation before the Card is erased from that file.
SORT
AutoSort is great for keeping your Cards indexed by last
name, but you may want them SORTed by another field. Press [S],
then [A] to alphabetized ALL Cards or [R] to do a RANGE of Cards.
When selecting a RANGE, "FIRST" refers to the Card to START from
and "LAST" means the LAST one to include.
Move the cursor to whichever field you want alphabetized,
then press [F10]. Almost instantly, your Cards will be in a new
order. Remember: The numbers of some Cards may change - these
numbers are simply for reference.
If AutoSort is "ON" when you SORT a field other than Name,
EZ-Cards will turn it "OFF" while letting you know it has done
so. Similarly, it will turn it back "ON" if you SORT the Name
field.
NOTE: SORTing the Name field alphabetizes last names just like
an AutoSort, whereas the other fields are indexed from left to
right. ANY field may be SORTed.
TRANSFER
You can place the TopCard into any different (or new) file
by selecting TRANSFER. You'll be shown a menu of files identical
to the one used for LOADing. Move the highlight bar to your
choice and press [ENTER]. Done! If you also want to keep this
Card in the current file, be sure to COPY it first.
A transferred Card is placed at the END of the destination
EZ-File. Keep this in mind when you LOAD that file.
-- Page 13 --
eXPORT
EZ-Cards will eXPORT any EZ-File to a normal "ASCII" comma-
delimited file. The eXPORTed filename will be identical with
exception to a 3-character extension of ".EZX". Fields will be
delimited with quotations and commas, while records will end with
a carriage return. You may also choose to include MEMOs.
QUIT
Press [Q] or [ESC] (while no other command is being
executed) to exit EZ-Cards. You'll be asked for confirmation
and, when you press [Y], the current file will be saved in its
present order.
